Thank you for your helpful article, and to others for their helpful responses. Do you know what age ranges the BESA will cover and when it is scheduled to be available for purchase? Does anyone know of a Spanish or Bilingual Spanish-English test for age 0 and up (appropriate for Birth - 3), other than the PLS-4 Spanish Edition? Thank you.

Nancy. Thank you for your article. It helps everyone know how carefully specific tests have been developed in Spanish. Unfortunately, may people think that versions of tests in Spanish are translations of English. Before purchasing a test the buyer should read about the test development process of a given test.

To Charley. A very helpful resource for Spanish language development, consult Educating Latino Preschool Children by Hart Kayser. Plural Publishers.

I am also looking for language/hearing milestones in Spanish and other language, and curious as to what the influence of bilingualism is on these milestones. As part of our state's newborn hearing screening program, I am looking for ways providers can better advise parents on monitoring their children's hearing, at least from birth to three.

Hi Liz,

One of the most concise collections of developmental information I've ever seen was in Dr. Raquel Anderson's (Indiana University) ASHA webinar titled "Assessing Children Who Speak Spanish: Milestones in Spanish Grammar Development." There is a replay that you can access from www.asha.org . I think the cost is $99, but it does give you access to the notes which have a lot of that information. The presentation was excellent and you get 0.2 CEUs for participating.

Other than that, I'm really interested to see what anyone else out there has.

I am trying to locate a language development chart that details milestones for Spanish speakers or bilingual (Spanish/English) children. Do you know of one?

Thank you for your discussion on the important factors surrounding testing children with tests that are are eith translated , adapted or are Spanish Editions. This discussion is critical for speech/language pathologists to understand when looking at children from other cultures.
