January is National Mentoring Month! Bilingual Therapies prides ourself on providing mentors for all of our bilingual clinicians, who are carefully selected by our clinical directors before each school year begins. Our clinical directors, Nate Cornish, M.S., CCC-SLP and Melissa White, M.A., CCC-SLP are strong supporters of mentorship and its benefits in increasing the cultural competence of BT clinicians.
Nate and Melissa were invited to write an article for ASHA’s Special Interest Group 14, Cultural and Linguistic Diversity (SIG 14) Perspectives publication. Information about SIG 14 and “Perspectives on Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Populations” can be found on the ASHA website.
In their article, “Cultural Proficiency: Supporting the Development of Cultural Competence in Mentoring Relationship”, they highlight how cultural competence can be developed through mentoring. Registered ASHA members who belong to a SIG can view and read their full article here.
