New Book Titles of Interest to SLPs Working with CLD Populations

Reflection:

The explosion of resources and very rapid access to those resources via the Internet has made it very difficult for anyone to decipher which information is most reliable and helpful when providing services to culturally and linguistically diverse populations (CLD). In the July ¿QUÉ TAL? I discussed ways to expand our knowledge in this area through available materials developed by ASHA, journal articles, and other professional activities.

This month I am listing and summarizing the content of three books that I have found to be particularly helpful in working with CLD populations and that have become part of my library.

Bilingual Language Development and Disorders in Spanish-English speakers (Goldstein, B., Ed.2004). Baltimore: Brooks Publishers

This book includes five different sections (Setting the Stage-Lexical and Semantic Aspects-From Grammar to Discourse, Speech Characteristics and Intervention). Each section includes one to five chapters written by various contributors. All authors have made a concerted effort to offer readers a research base for each topic with implications for practice.

As stated in the introduction, the book’s consistent theme is that processes of first and second language acquisition are interrelated and may be expressed in different ways by bilingual children as compared to monolingual children n each language. Therefore, results of research need to be analyzed taking into account the contexts, ages, and methodologies used. Even though we have a growing body of research, it is always up to the clinician to balance the knowledge base with day by day situations. Gathering a language history, assessing the student taking into account input from families and professional as well as consideration of types of materials used and students’ type of responses will be important in formulating a possible diagnosis and outlining plans for intervention.

Developing Cross-Cultural Competence: A Guide for Working with Children and Their Families (Lynch & Hanson, Eds.2004). Baltimore: Brookes Publishers.

The ever-increasing numbers of immigrants from all corners of the world makes it necessary for every professional to be knowledgeable about the history, immigration, culture and beliefs of those individuals they come in contact with. However, generalizations should be avoided. The book describes several different groups that include: Anglo-European, American Indian, African American, Latino, Asian, Pilipino, Native Hawaiian and Samoan, Middle Eastern and South Asian. Each chapter is written by a different author or sets of authors.

Appendices at the end of each chapter contrasting beliefs, values and practices between a given group and the mainstream are helpful in obtaining a quick overview of differences or similarities. Some cultural courtesies and customs as well as significant holidays celebrated by each group are also included. Recommendations for interventionists who work with the particular group and an extended bibliography are appended at the end of each chapter

Manual de Desarrollo y Alteraciones del Lenguaje: Aspectos Evolutivos y Patologia en el Niño y el Adulto (Puyuelo & Rondal, Eds.2003). Barcelona, Masson.

Several of us work with clients of different ages for whom Spanish is their first language This book enables us to access a more authentic interpretation of terms and processes used in our profession directly in Spanish. For this reason, I strongly recommend this text. The book includes 18 chapters with topics ranging from development of oral language to phonological disorders, deafness, acquisition of literacy, language challenges in adolescence, autism, childhood aphasia, organic speech disorders (velopharyngeal insufficiency) as well as communication and language in older age.
